At Sea – September 25–26, 2025

Cruising the West Coast Aboard the Zaandam

After a whirlwind start, we’re relishing two calm and relaxing days at sea—just what we needed to unwind and settle in. We’ve taken this opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with the beautifully renovated Zaandam. From fresh carpets and new chairs to thoughtfully revamped spaces, the ship feels almost brand new. It’s wonderful to see Holland America Line investing in these classic, smaller ships—there’s still so much charm and character here.

One highlight was the fabulous wine tasting experience—always a treat—and we’ve enjoyed some exceptional meals. A special dinner in the Canaletto was made even better by sharing it with Jan’s former colleague, Anita, and her lovely mum. Good food, good wine, and good company—what more could we ask for?

We’re currently sailing south along the west coast of North America with only 720 passengers on board, which is about half of the ship’s capacity. The extra space has been a luxury—it truly feels like the calm before the storm as we approach San Diego, where we expect many more guests to join.

On the technical front, we’ve got some great news: the blog is back! After some behind-the-scenes work with the platform developer, we were able to reactivate it. Turns out, the platform had been updated and all formal subscriptions were cancelled in the process—even my lifetime one! While the new version requires a bit more manual formatting on my end, I’m happy to report that they’ve extended my subscription at no additional cost. Hooray for small victories!

So, to our longtime blog followers—welcome back! And to any new readers—welcome aboard. We’re excited to share this next chapter of our journey as we set sail for the magical South Pacific.

So wonderful having Rod, our wine Somolier on board.
