Flamingos, Friendships and the Garden Isle of Kauai
With the opening of the Lido Tiki Bar, it seems our pink flamingos have returned as well! These familiar pink friends add to the festive atmosphere, helping to create that relaxed, tropical feeling of a beach holiday. There is something about seeing them around the pool that makes it feel as though we are truly settling into our Hawaiian adventure.
We also had the pleasure of sharing our dinner table with an officer the other evening, and what an interesting conversation it turned out to be!
Our guest was Milenia, the Environmental Officer, whose responsibilities include ensuring compliance with the many regulations governing what can be discharged from the ship. It is a much more complex position than one might imagine, with so many factors to consider.
Rules vary depending on which part of the world the ship is sailing through, and the location itself plays an important role. Proximity to land, tides, ocean currents and protected areas, along with the marine life inhabiting those waters, all have to be taken into account. It certainly gives you a new appreciation for the work that goes on behind the scenes to keep a ship operating responsibly.
We first met Milenia on this cruise last year, so it was lovely to catch up again and hear more about her work. Thank you, Milenia, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to visit with us. It was a pleasure seeing you again, and we wish you safe travels home!
