Banana Coast (Trujillo), Honduras - Mar 04, 2015

Honduras, wow, who would have thought that we would get to Honduras of all places. Within the last year, year and a half, Holland America have recently started calling this a port of call on their Western Caribbean itineraries. The people here are thrilled to have their town included and have very quickly started building the infrastructure to support a cruse or two at anchor in the protected bay. Two great sheltered tender docks are now in place as well as great reception grounds for cruise ship passengers - yes all the handicraft shops, liquor outlets and restaurants offering free wifi. Beyond the cruise ship compound you have the usual hawkers offering tours etc. but not really on a hard sell basis, they are really just happy you have arrived and from what we saw along the main drag going into the historical town were smiling, friendly people offering you something, from shells, to pictures with their monkeys to the many, many restaurants on the beach offering you cheap beer and free wifi - did I say they are happy to see us.

Many of the roads here are dirt, the town centre is built with cobble stones, this part of Honduras only plugged into electricity in the 1980's. With tourism opening up here the construction business is booming from hotels the paved streets currently being built and paved. Our visitor dollars at work here on the Banana Coast. Two things of note, Yes, they have Bananas here and second, Christopher Columbus made a landfall her in 1502 on his fourth and final visit to the Americas.
