On our own all day today so we took the shuttle to The Bund and then walked along the pedestian boardwalk to The Old City and to YuYuan district and the incredible Yu Gardens. The Bund by the way is the river front walking area about 50 feet wide and goes on for about a kilometer and a half.
The YuYuan area contains the Old Shanghai pedestrian shopping area and houses the peaceful and tranquil Yu Gardens.
The Peace Hotel
Mid-lake Pavilion and the Nine-corned Zigzag Bridge.
In most gardens in south China the bridges are always zigzagged. In ancient China “nine” was considered the highest number, symbolizing a great number and magnificent scale. The zigzag bridges are designed to partition the water surfaces to enable visitors to enjoy the scene of the swimming fish in the pond, the lotus and scenery on both sides. The zigzagging of the bridge also prevents the bad spirits from crossing as they cannot find a direct line to the other side.
The Yu Gardens
Finding my way in the subway maze.
The main shopping area Nanjing Street, about six blocks of pedestrian only shopping.
Walking back to our ship.
Shanghai at night from the ship.
Next port Xiamen, People’s Republic of China.
Tip or Comment of the day. Comes from our pillow card last night.
We’re so engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of outer value that we forget that the inner value, the rapture that is associated with being alive, it what it’s all about.
