December 04, 2021: Rome, Italy

When in Rome, you have a tendency to do a lot of roaming, 16000 plus steps today and in many areas we had not been to or hadn’t visited in a while. Our meandering path today took us to an area where a good portion of the old Rome wall was still standing, this wall was constructed in the early first century, around 200 AD, if only some of those bricks could talk. We also visited two highly recommended churches, not necessarily for the church part but for art contained within. The first was, Basilica of Saint Praxedes and the second was, Basilica Di San Pietro in Vincoli (St. Peter in Chains). The art here is worth being in a museum but here it is as it was meant to be displayed, in the little niches and alcoves. Yes, one needs to drop a euro into the magic box to have a light bring the piece to life but there is usually someone in the crowd willing to do so, and if not, hey, it’s only a euro. The second church, St, Peter in chains, it contains a very large Michelangelo carving definitely worth the Euro. Then after 3 weeks in Rome we finally visited the infamous Coliseum, visited meaning we did a good slow walk by including the grounds close by. We had done the tours of both the Coliseum and the Forum in the past and those memories still remain pretty fresh. For those visiting Rome for a first time, yes, highly recommended thing to do. From here we continued our meander back to our hotel with a stop in a Christmas market, a little lunch and then we ran into the beginnings of an organized demonstration, don’t ask, no idea, I just know there where a lot of police, many roads closed off, including around the train station. I had visions of our problem in Lima, Peru a few years ago and decided we should just keep moving. I just feel bad for all the people with luggage coming from the train station, with roads closed, this meant no taxis. A few streets off the protest route, we could see many people walking along with suitcases. Very happy we came in yesterday.

Dinner tonight was at a spot just around the corner from the hotel. We had a very nice and reasonably priced meal. As we left the restaurant some light showers began falling so we just headed back to hotel. It is supposed to rain tonight and stop in the morning with the sun returning around 10:00am, now that’s good planning. A few pics of the day, hope you enjoy…
