More roaming today as we clicked off another 14,000 steps in a mainly sunny 15 degree day, very pleasant. We are still wandering to lesser known or popular sites to see, today was no different. We headed the 15 minute walk from our hotel to the Capuchin Crypt. This Crypt is comprised five underground chapels located under Rome’s church of Santa Maria Della Concezione dei Cappuccini, Capuchin Crypt is a haunting heritage site decorated with the bones of around 3,700 Capuchin friars. Sorry, no photos allowed but as grim as this may sound the display of these bones throughout the five chapels is absolutely amazing. Yes, the bones of St. Francis of Assisi are here as well. The history in this city is truly mind blowing. We left the crypt for some daylight and strolled over to the Borghese gardens, sat in the sun amongst all the statues. Then we continued down to the Plaza Navona as I had read somewhere that there was a Christmas market there, but alas once again this year it was cancelled - insert sad face. Apparently some of the vendors were not Covid compliant and therefore ruined it for everyone with the city making the decision to cancel.
We did survive though as our meandering down here included several shop stop ins. We had a nice, reasonable, late lunch just outside the main piazza because well, inside the plaza it is a lot less reasonable. Note, if you are in an area with lots of tourists and there are dining opportunities, you will pay pretty much double. Just walk a few blocks away and you will not be disappointed. After lunch we strolled the main shopping area to head back to the hotel, the half hour walk on google maps took upwards to an hour and a half, there were just so many shops opened. It also looks like with it being Sunday, the crowds were out in force, the weekender travellers were here as well as the locals, and I will say that even on the streets upwards to about 80% of the people were wearing their masks. Lots of Christmas lights everywhere on the streets, so a very festive feel in the air. Needless to say, we got to our hotel much later than anticipated, so we picked up a grab and go dinner to have in our room tonight. We do have an early day tomorrow with our Covid tests booked for 8:30 am, not sure why but I feel a little nervous… By this time tomorrow we will know our results for our flights on Tuesday. My fingers are crossed, you just never know. A few pics of our day, hope you enjoy…
