Captain’s Reception - Sept 23, 2014

We have now had the official welcome reception and as the seas have promised us we are into the deep troughs. We are just north west of Haida Gwai (sp) (they still call this the Queen Charlottes - but we know better) and the weather is a bit nasty, 50 knot head winds. This is fine by us as we are low down and at the centre of the ship, for us it is more like swaying in a hammock.

We had a great first formal night tonight. Great reception followed by an incredible dinner hosted by Rene the Spa Manager. Jacques the Cellar Master came over to ensure our liquid needs were well taken care of - we were the first to sample some of the new wines on board, a nice touch. After a great dinner the staff gathered around and presented Jan and I with a wonderful Happy Anniversary Cake, they sang there local Indonesian celebration song - this was very touching, so much so that I did not even get a picture of the cake. It was delicious, thank you Tom. I believe Jeff has a few pictures, I will try to include tomorrow. The evening was capped off by tenor Lee Bradley, his show just gets better and better. We then had Jonathan and Julie wish us a Happy Anniversary followed by Chief Engineer Ian Taylor with his wife Grace, simply put a great day and night. The bonus is that our clocks go back an hour tonight, still have a lot of sleep to catch up on.

Pictures include, all the usual suspects, Ellie and Jeff, Jan with Dolly, Tai Chi buddy Ginger with husband Bill, Gene, Ian, Gerd, Jonathan, Daniel, Cristel and Cruise Director Gene Young with the last picture our table mates, Rene is at the bottom right.

  1. Hi Jan and Gerard,
As we can see you are back on the Amsterdam for the Great Pacific Cruise. We are very glad that you, Jan, are okay after all the troubles you had in the past. We can imagine how it feels when you hear from the surgeon that everything is okay now. Congratulation, also for your 15th anniversary. Have a good time on board! We will be on the Amsterdam in January next year. What about you? Kind regards, Angelique and Gerard from Holland.

  2. Happy Anniversary you two!! We well remember the seas of 2010/2011, making the first few days at sea a good time of weight loss.
We are all packed and ready for the Vancouver/Fort Lauderdale sailing aboard the Zuiderdam on Sat. Next on the agenda, a portion of the World.
Enjoy and greetings to all ............ Grace and Clifford
