July 16, 2022, Scenic Cruising of Prince Christian Sund, Greenland - Part 1

So, yes, just before dinner last night the captain came and informed us that the passage will be clear enough for us to make the transit, hooray. That said, with the clock moving forward an hour and with all that rich food, 3:30 am is when the ole tummy rumble kicked in. All good, just a lot of tossing and turning, on and off again sleep, then 8:00 am (so really 7) and we enter the first fiord on our way the Prince Christian Sund. There were several channels to navigate including a couple of hair pin turns and with that all the amazing beauty along the way. I made my second mistake during the day, I get like a kid in a candy shop, where I must stay out and see everything. Well this cost me today with the filtered sunlight and no sunscreen. Combine that with my limited sleep from last night, I had a very little dinner and sipping ginger ale all night. I am going to let the pictures speak for themselves tonight. I will say that this was a Viking short cut route and there were many glaciers that we passed by, many of which are connected to the main glacier of Greenland which extends some 2700 kilometres in length. Yes, the question was asked regarding if this entire glacier melted, the answer, seas would rise some 7 meters flooding just about all seaside cities. There is one village along our route consisting of 126 inhabitants, they are apparently quite content as there is an abundance of fishing and seal hunting there. We did pass two other cruise ships going the other direction and finally as we exited the Sund there is a weather station that was built in the early 1940’s by the Americans to aid in forecasting flights to and from Europe. It was manned up until about ten years ago, now fully automated. That’s it as we lose another of sleep with the clocks moving forward once again. This will probably be in two parts as the wifi out here is expectingly not the best as we are in the middle of nowhere, we are now between Greenland and Iceland. Hope you enjoy the pics…

  1. What a great blog and wonderful pictures. Prince Christian Sound has the most spectacular scenery and on the VOV you get to experience it twice...YEAH!!!
Glad to see that both of you are staying healthy.
