Aug 02, 2022, Akureyri, Iceland

With approximately 16,000 inhabitants, Akureyri, carriers the nickname of the Capital of North Iceland. This area was originally settled in about the 9th century, but the first official mention of Akureyri as a city was not until 1562. Today Akureyri is a thriving port town with an economy largely based on its booming fishing industry.

There are a variety of hiking trails and walking paths within the city limits. We were here four years ago and had hit all the high points here, including but not limited to strolling the botanical gardens (founded in 1912), visiting the Akureyri church (1940), to taking a local tour to Godafoss falls (waterfall of the gods). So for us today with a bit of research we did a nice 9 klm loop of the city with the focus bringing us to a beautiful walkway along the Glera river. A very nice day here with a temperature of about 8 degrees (c), with very light scattered showers.

Back to the ship by about 3pm for a lite lunch before settling in for the scenic cruising for the next 2 plus hours out of this fiord. The captain said, keep an eye out for whales, we shall see.

Some pics of the day, hope you enjoy… again we have spotty wifi as we head back to the Arctic circle.
