May 16-19, 2023 - Andiamo to California

Someone turned up the heat as we experiencing 30+ degree temperatures here in Northern California, whew, very happy to have 2 a/c units helping to keep our Andiamo nicely on the cool side. Our drive had us staying on the coast and enjoyed more of these massive, incredible Redwoods. We made a quick photo stop at the Mystery of Trees attraction as well as, The Big Tree, in the Redwood National Forest. If you have the time the Mystery of Trees is definitely worth a walk through, we will keep this one in mind. Just a bit further down the road we stopped for a photo stop with the Elk grazing just off the road, there must have been at least 20 to 30. We made it as far as Trinidad before seeking out a stop for our overnight stay. Emerald Forest Cabins and RV was conveniently located just off the highway 101. This was a very nice RV Park set amongst the incredible Redwoods, they gave us site 65, which was nestled amongst these massive, beautiful trees. The host recommended for us to have dinner at the Trinidad Bay Eatery, just fantastic. This was a very nice stay.

We had an early start the next morning, well 10:30 is early for us as we had a 3.5 hour travel day today. We have learned that in the RV world 3.5 hours equals 5 to 6 hours with even short stops along the way, this is fine but can get a bit tiring because when you are driving you must be full on your game. Today, we only made one short stop which got us into our Russian River RV park by about 4pm. Russian River is a Thousand Trails RV park, meaning first come, first served, that said, there were plenty to choose from where we decided on site 73 in Loop C - a good choice. We had a nice two night stop here which is great, single night stays are good but it is nicer to break up the driving with a day in between. BTW, our original plan did call for more 2 night stays but as mentioned earlier with our route change we had to sacrifice some of our double nighters. So with our 2 night stay this gave us a chance to fill our fridge (aka, shop) and do our first round of laundry. Although they did have machines in the RV Park we decided on going to a laundromat with numerous machines allowing us to do two loads at a time. Plus the laundromat had great wifi, a double win. Other than that, the park had great walking trails and a nice beach down by the river but do not go into the river as the current at this time of year is too rapid. This leads us to today, hey, we are getting caught up. Today we departed Russian River at 11am and pulled into Los Banos at 4pm. Traffic was one for the books today as our route was still along the 101 but we headed inland a bit we changed over to the I580 at San Francisco. Think 4 to 6 lanes of bumper to bumper traffic. We pay close attention to the GPS and make our moves well in advance. Yes, there are some drivers that cut right in front of us, but you can’t panic, well as long as they don’t slam on their brakes. So for a good hour to an hour and a half we played in this traffic as we moved through the big centres of San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland etc., making our way back over to the I5. We are now in the Oasis West RV Park, a former KOA park, nice enough but seems like there are several semi permanent campers, which is fine just makes it feel a bit strange. We chatted with one couple who have been here since last September, he works on the dam close by, so a lot of seasonal workers. We will try to fit in…
