Well this was a first and will cause me to check options on an ongoing basis in the future. After a pleasant night at our canyon campground in Soledad we hooked up and jumped in our trusty tow vehicle and keyed in our next destination in Idyllwild. 2.5 hours came up, perfect and then a moment later it said 4.5 hours? I checked this a few times yesterday to confirm the route and any possible stops along the way, stops like gas and shopping, something was amiss, this should only be 2.5 hours away.
I kept the truck’s GPS up while a ran my iPhone GPS in tandem. I was hoping for a change in the truck’s GPS when we arrived an San Bernardino but no. I called the Campground from our shopping stop at the Walmart to clarify the routing situation, well they confirmed that it should only take us just over an hour and that the road was in good shape and should be all clear. Okay then, we continue. The change in GPS happened in Beaumont, the truck wanted to go one way, my phone the other, we went with the phone and stuck to it. The truck kept rerouting and recalculating over the next half hour or so. We climbed and climbed 4,000 feet, 5,000 feet, 6,000 feet, yes the road was somewhat narrow and very windy but it was very doable and our truck pulled just fine, no issues with speed or handling. We even passed a one tonne pulling a fifth wheel as they pulled into a pull off, so all good. We arrived at our campground at the correct time and the ranger just said that depending on the GPS, it may want to take you around to the more gradual and wider road. I said, that was what I thought as I knew there was more than one way to get up here. We are actually going back down that way as it leads us right into Palm Desert in a few days. For now and the next few days we will enjoy our campground at 7,000 feet. Nice and cool up here.
Idyllwild is another massive campground with over 800 different types of camping options. Tents to campers to cabins. Again, we are here in the off season, so we have plenty of choice. Pictures to come. The village of Idyllwild is about 10 minutes and has several shops and restaurants that we will check out tomorrow. Tonight we had a fabulous meal at a local eatery named, Ferro, Italian with a fantastic setting.
Our pics of our time here, hope you enjoy…
The views at about 6,000 feet. A little smoggy down below.
No I didn’t spray paint that but, hey, it works for us…
Our trusty set up…
