Argostoli, Greece - October 21, 2012

Another beautiful day floating in the Ionian Sea and into Argostoli, Greece. Argostoli has been the capital and administrative centre of Kefalonia, Greece since 1757, following a population shift down from the old capital of Agios Georgios taking advantage of the trading opportunities provided by the sheltered bay upon where the city of Argostoli sits. Argostoli developed into one of the busiest ports in Greece, leading to prosperity and growth, but between 1866 and 1999 the administrative borders changed little. Following the “Kapodistrias Law” of 1997, communities around the town united to form a larger Municipality of Argistoli. The 2001 census reported the population of this entire municipality to be 12,589. Argostoli had to completely rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1953, rebuilt in a modern style. We had an early morning HAL tour taking us to the breathtaking stalactite and stalagmites in the Drogati cave and then to a small boat adventure to the underground Lake Melissani where the water seeps from the Ionian Sea taking two weeks to arrive to the lake. This porous nature of the limestone rock which is predominate in this area causes this natural phenomenon, absolutely stunning. We have just experienced another magnificent sail away from Argostoli and looking forward to our day in Santorini tomorrow and then finally a sea day... whew. A few pictures of our tour today.
