Also known as “The Valley Isle”, is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands. Maui is known for its world famous beaches, the sacred ‘Lao valley, cuisine and sunrise and sunsets from mount Haleakala. Also in the winter months you can be witness to the many migrating Humpback whales. We had a most wonderful day here with mixed weather but great sightseeing as we clocked over 160 miles on the rental car.
Lahaina in Maui is a tender port which means that there is no dock so the ship sits at anchor and ferries the guests in on tenders ((Lifeboats). We were able to use our five star tender privileges here which in this case put us, Dot and Ed onto the first tender, nice. Ed had made prior arrangements for car rentals at each of the ports and we were very fortunate to go along for the ride. Once in Lahaina our Uber was waiting to take us the 15 minutes to Kaanapali in the north west area of Maui. Ed and Dot had a plan for the day taking us south to Mount Haleakala and halfway to Hana. This worked very well for us as the last time we were here we toured the entire north. The Hertz car rental is located at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort which is a pretty amazing located resort in Kaanapali. This resort comes equipped with not only parrots but penguins, yes, penguins. While Ed was processing the car paperwork we were fortunate enough to be here during the penguin show - crazy.
Into the car we go, GPS set for Mount Haleakala and off we went making a few scenic stops along the way. Unfortunately the weather atop of the mountain was not ideal but was nice to make it back to the top of this 10,000 foot mountain. The last time we were here was back in 1993 for sunrise, which is highly recommended if you get the opportunity. Heading back down and on our way to the road to Hana we stopped for a quick roadside lunch before doing half the drive to Hana. Why halfway, well Ed wanted to drive at least part of this road so we identified a wonderful waterfall at just past the halfway point, Ko’olau falls to get a good feel for this road. Also, when on a ship, time is of the essence, so halfway was a good turnaround spot. We made several stops on the way back taking in the breathtaking scenery that this road and island offer. We returned the car to enjoy a beautiful sunset from the Hyatt hotel.
A wonderful day indeed, a few pics, hope you enjoy…
