January 18, 2019: Matarani - Peru

Matarani is a port city in the Arequipa region of Peru. It is a major port on the southern coast of Peru. The port here really has nothing to offer, not even any vendors at the pier. It is recommended to visit the charming colonial city some 75 miles away but to do so it would be suggested to do this through a ship excursion. There are no taxis at the pier so you would need to take the shuttle into the town of Mollendo where there are a few taxis but they do not look that reliable or comfortable, 75 miles there and back would not be that much fun. So for us we took this an easy day and took the 45 minute shuttle into the, beach community, town of Mollendo - there was enough there to make a short day of it.

They had a great market which stretched over some six blocks, lots of pic opportunities both of the displays as well as people. We then strolled the four about four blocks down to the beach side and wow this beach was like an Ipanema size beach with vendors, music, water slides and private cabanas, so if you are looking for a beach day here it is. We strolled around a bit and then found some great wifi at a local drinking hole (large beer about $3 per bottle). Order a beer, give the guy your phone and he logs you in - you give him the phone because there is no english here and the password is some 25 characters long.

Back on the shuttle and the ship for another late 3 o’clock lunch before having a bit of a rest before our early showtime at 6:30 pm (great flutist from Spain), some strings before dinner then dinner at 8. Although their anniversary isn’t until June or was in June of last year (their 40th), they booked this trip as part of their big anniversary so the crew on board celebrated this milestone tonight, congratulations to Marcel and Marianne. We had an early show tonight because our clocks are rolling forward two hours tonight, yikes. So wrapping this upload up now because it is already technically past midnight.

A few pics of our day…  hope you enjoy…
