Maui Reflections: A Day in Kahului & Remembering Lahaina
Maui has long been a cherished gem of the Hawaiian Islands, steeped in legend, natural beauty, and aloha spirit. Known as The Valley Isle, Maui is the second-largest Hawaiian island and has captivated visitors for generations with its lush rainforests, volcanic peaks, and breathtaking beaches. It’s a place of deep cultural roots — from the ancient Hawaiian kingdoms to the plantation era and beyond.
But Maui’s recent history has also been marked by heartbreak. In August 2023, the historic town of Lahaina was devastated by fast-moving wildfires, a tragedy that stunned Hawaii and the world. The fire consumed much of the town’s core, claiming lives, homes, and centuries-old buildings. Yet, amid the ashes, one remarkable symbol of resilience remained — the iconic Lahaina Banyan Tree, charred but alive, continuing to stand as a symbol of hope and rebirth.
First Time Docking in Kahului
Today marked a new experience for us — docking on the Kahului side of Maui for the first time. With Lahaina still in a time of mourning and healing, ships now come into the harbor here. One unexpected perk? Kahului is a docked port, not a tender port, which means easier access to shore and a little less hustle.
Over the years, we’ve explored many parts of Maui, but Kahului has always been more of a pass-through than a destination for us. That changed today.
We stepped off the ship at a leisurely 10:30 a.m., ready for a relaxed day. Just a short walk from the pier is a convenient mall (a welcome bit of civilization), and a little farther on, we found a lovely, warm-water beach. Safe, inviting, and perfect for a swim.
After soaking in the sun and saltwater, we made our way back to the mall — and here’s where the real adventure happened.
Spa Time & First Pedicure Confession
Jan finally talked me into something I never thought I’d do: my very first pedicure. She confidently told the spa technician, “He will have a deluxe treatment.” Well, that was that.
Let me tell you — I had no idea what I was in for. A cheese grater used on my feet? Wild. But after the initial surprise, I realized… this was amazing. My feet have never felt so soft. Walking out, I wasn’t sure if I was floating or just overly aware of how smooth my soles were. Either way, I get it now. Total game-changer.
Late Lunch & Back Aboard
We wrapped up the day with a comforting bowl of ramen for a late lunch before heading back to the ship around 4:30 p.m. The day was easygoing, restorative, and filled with the small pleasures that make travel so memorable.
Though our hearts still carry the weight of Lahaina’s loss, today was a reminder of how Maui continues to offer peace, joy, and beauty — even in new places and unexpected experiences.
Until Next Time, Maui.
From the banyan tree’s resilience to a beachside pedicure and a bowl of ramen, today was a quiet celebration of Maui’s enduring spirit. Here’s to healing, new memories, and more soft-footed walks in paradise.
