With a bang, a chang and a clunk we arrived in Fort Lauderdale this morning as the ship moved into unload mode at about 6am. Okay I am awake now. For us it was moving day, some six doors down towards the center of the ship. Unfortunately the guests in our new room did not vacate until about 9am so moving was delayed where we finally processed ourselves through immigration at about 10:30 and jumped into a cab and headed for a stroll along Los Olas Boulevard. Nice to spend a bit of time here, nice canals lined with massive, incredible yachts, there is a lot of money floating around here and the shops, lots of cool stuff here, if you are an art lover take a stroll along Los Olas.
So here we are checking out the shops, stopping for a cappuccino browsing, taking our time, I look at my watch and I am thinking yah 2 o'clock time to think about getting a cab. Hmm, don't see any, guy comes by in one of those extended golf carts, you know, one of these guys that runs a shuttle between the shopping district and the beaches, says it 3 bucks apiece plus tip, I say thanks but we will just get a taxi. Ah, 2:15 no cabs will stop when flagged, hmm getting a bit nervous now. Thinking about getting a shop to call a cab for us when our friend Mr. Golf Cart comes by again, I flag him and say okay take us to the beach where there are cabs aplenty. No problem he says. He says where you going, we tell him, he thinks for a second and says that for $25 he will take us to the ship. I ask if this golf cart will be able to go that far as well as get there on time, 3 o'clock is the all aboard time BTW. He say yup, so great here we go at the break neck speed of 15 klms/hr. 25 minutes to three and I am getting nervous as we round the bend to see about 6 blocks of grid lock, oh oh... but hey we are in a golf cart and he simply moves into the bike lane and passes all the sitting cars, now I am saying we made the right choice, Jan agrees. As we come over the next crest our driver, Mr. Golf Cart informs us that he would need to drop us off at the port gate as he is not authorized to go beyond - now we know we are in trouble as with the taxi this morning the meter read $10.00 from the ship to the port gate. We say just pull up we will show our boarding passes, just give it a try, ah...please. So we pull up at about a quarter too, the gate keeper (okay, security officer) looks at our passes then looks at his watch, shakes his head side side a few times and says go, third light then to the left. I should say here in defense of Mr. Golf Cart, right at the gate was another cruise ship, a Princess ship. So we sail through feeling pretty good and then Mr. Golf Cart's phone rings, his boss wants to know where the blank he is. He hangs up and smiles to us that everything is okay and tells us with this huge grin that he has never been this far out, turns up the stereo in the Golf Cart. 2:57 and we are safely on the ship, yes I did tip him, huge.
Back on ship, this is strange, with exception of some crew members, we do not see all the familiar faces in their familiar spots. "We are on three we need to go to four, what's on four, no we need to deck eight" we hear from the new guests. This is going to be a fun few first days as these guests become familiar with the ship. Oh, bing, bong, bing and a the very familiar voice of Captain Eversen is heard throughout the ship, okay we feel a bit better. Captain Eversen informs us that the ship will be late leaving port because they are still loading on the stores. Well I know that from walking the halls yesterday, that we are not late because of loading, I know it is from unloading, I have never seen so many suitcases and boxes piled up to be offloaded, two boxes (the ones I saw anyways, maybe there is more) were as big as me, I said to someone maybe they wrapped up their spouse because it was cheaper than a plane ticket, ha ha... We heard this morning that one stateroom had a total of 36 separate Fed Ex luggage tags sent to their room, yikes... So we were to depart by 4pm, lines finally let go at 5:30. Captain Eversen says we will traveling at 21 knots tonight to make Half Moon Cay by 8:00am...
Our journey continues... For those of you we met for the first time and the many we were very fortunate to see again, we had a great time with you and look forward to sailing with you again. If you are new to our blog, welcome, we hope you enjoy the journey from behind our lens
Hope this uploads okay, needed to see the "Internet Person" to ensure our minutes where transferred to our new stateroom...
