Every king's dream, Versailles was the residence of French monarchs and the cultural heartbeat of Europe for about 100 years, well right up until the French Revolution of 1789. And on a beautiful cool sunny Thursday we decided to make the metro RER trek out to this incredible site for what is now our third visit. First time was the tour of the Chateau in 1998, the gardens in 2004 and now our third time where we recapped the incredible chateau but also peeled back an additional layer and visited Maria Antoinette's playground deep in the back of the grounds of the property. Highlights of the Chateau pictured here are the Royal Chapel, Hall of Mirrors and the King's and council rooms. With our handy Rick Steeves audio guide and book in tow we stopped at one of the wonderful restaurants on site, La Flottille. Rick had indicated that the snack shacks and restaurants on site here were reasonable and he was indeed correct as we had a very nice lunch here. If you are looking for all the grandeur and and beauty of the gardens, this is not the time of year to visit. Fountains are not running, statutes are in the most part covered up and the much of the gardens are in maintenance mode. Again okay for us as we had our sights on areas left for us to discovered. First pics are up to this point, hope you enjoy.
