Antartica Experience - Jan 31, 2020 (Day2) Part 1

Pretty much a perfect Antarctic day as we woke at 6 am to grey but high cloud giving way to some sunshine onto to the peaks of the mountains as we snaked along the Neumyaer Channel. From here we cruised into Paradise Harbour, lots more floating ice in here this year, that said the Captain and Ice Pilot did get us in a lot further than I thought he would go, full marks on our route with some pretty large glacier floats coming within feet of our vessel - well done. Time for lunch as slowly made our way to Wilhelmina Bay. We were once again met with some chunky glaciers and a good 5 kilometres of brash ice (think of slurpy ice or ice in a margarita), the captain again found a great route as we listened to the snap, crackle, pop of the ice for a good half hour. He again took us in further than I thought he was going to so we had some great views of not only the natural scenery but a great abundance of wildlife. Great views of penguins, seals, Minke and Humpback whales. I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story for our day today as two early days (well, for me), no naps and pretty much go, go, go. Tonight we did get an announcement that as a result of the Corona Virus the visit from the folks from Palmer Station will not happen tomorrow. All visits have now been cancelled for the rest of the season. The issue is any possibility of contracting it. There are limited doctor facilities down here as well as transport out, better safe than sorry. For us, not a problem as we saw these amazing people not even a year ago, so more scenic cruising for us, yeah. For the others on the ship hopefully our team on will provide some insight as to what goes in the daily life of Palmer Station researcher. Hope you enjoy the pics of the day… BTW - Again, we are off the main grid of satellites availability, our wifi has slowed to a snails pace and uploading has become a bit difficult, please bear with us - the blog is done and in the tray for next available uploading, could be tonight or ….
