Ushuaia is at 55 degrees latitude south and holds the distinction of being “the southernmost city in the world”. It is the largest city in Argentina Tierra del Fuego, an archipelago of nearly 30,000 square miles. It is surrounded by the South Atlantic Ocean, the strait of Magellan and the easternmost part of the Pacific Ocean. So we are about as low as you can go in the civilized world.
We were in no rush today, we walked off the ship at about 10 am for a good walk about this city in more or less a loop fashion, down along the waterfront to the Maritime Museum then up the main street with it many shops. Ushuaia has shops with just everything you would need, from clothes to equipment (this is the port where several of the expedition boats sail to the Antarctica begin their journeys). There are also plenty of restaurants here as well along with the many tourist souvenir shops. We finished our loop at about 12:30 in time to get some, not bad, wifi at the harbour. !:30 was all aboard time, we snuck in at about 1:20. Lunch and a short nap later it was time for some scenic cruising, first along the Beagle Channel for about 45 minutes before we turned right and entered Glacier Alley. We came down from the other way last year, so once again, great to go the opposite direction. The lighting and scenery was fantastic, I was up front in the harsh 35 to 40 mph wind but that was okay, dressed accordingly and it kept many of the others away allowing for full back and forth movement. The sun peaked out at about 4 adding another dimension to the snow, glacier packed mountains. I had to come in at about 7 to get ready for our Darwin themed dinner tonight, very nice. During dinner though, I had to dart outside between courses as the sun was hitting two peaks just perfectly, not sure where they are going to show up in the sequence but they are included. Another great day and it will be another early day tomorrow, some early scenic cruising before getting to our next port of Punta Arenas. Some pics of our day, hope you enjoy…
