In 2014 we visited here for the first time and at that time after our 500 day medallion we had yet to visit any port in the Caribbean. So this was our introduction to the Caribbean. Many of our fellow travellers at the time told us to be prepared to fall in love with this part of the world, that said, we have visited the Caribbean many times and absolutely love it here. The Caribbean is just easy, warm and comfortable, everything you want and need is here. Castries is the Capital of St. Lucia and lies on the northwestern coast of the island. It was founded in the mid 17 century by the French, Castries eventually became a major coaling station fo the Royal Navy. The city had been rebuilt several times after three substantial fires in the years 1796, 1813 and in 1948. Today the city boasts a booming tourism industry with attracting visitors from around the world.
Visiting here is like visiting an old friend, we had no set plans today so before heading out we chatted and got caught up with some wonderful people we hadn’t seen in a while before heading out and just strolling the town. The town from the cruise port is an easy 20 minute walk away. The main gathering square is the Walcott Square with its incredible Cathedral to the Immaculate Conception and the main library. Close by here the is a large indoor / outdoor market with about 300 stalls - go by the first 10 and then its wash, rinse and repeat, as they are selling pretty much the same tourist items. We headed back to the ship by about 1pm to grab our ipads and head to the Rum Therapy bar at the end of the cruise shopping area, they seem to have great beer specials here along with some pretty good wifi - tip also bring your iPhone or other device if you are here to download Netflix, this way you will have another device to surf with while downloading. Other tip, if you don’t want to walk to town from the ship, there is a ferry shuttle beside this bar and for $5USD they will shuttle you right downtown (I believe that is a $5 return ticket)
Great sail away tonight as the full moon was rising, love my pic with the full moon over the Pitons, I thought it was going to be too dark but I think it turned out great. Here are a few pics of our day, hope you enjoy, one day at sea before we hit Devil’s Island. Our journey continues…
