Roseau, Dominica: Jan 8, 2020

It is our second time here in Roseau, we had a beautiful warm sun drenched day here touring the town along with the Botanical Gardens. This island is known as “nature island” which dates back to the 16th century by the French. The area was taken over by the British in the last 18th century and today both the French and British Colonial architecture can be seen throughout the island. The temperatures here average in the upper 80’s (high 20’s Celsius) and by the looks of the runoff ditches by the roads and sidewalks, this topical rainforest does receive a good amount of rain. A few years ago Hurricane Maria hit this coast very hard which has changed the landscape tremendously. On September 18, 2017, Hurricane Maria hit Dominica with 160 mile an hour winds, damaging and destroying the roofs of an estimated 90 percent of buildings, including the Prime Minister’s residence, and toppling not only the power lines but some of the thickest strongest and oldest trees in the forest. The rebuilding is well on its way but the many roofs are still in disrepair and still covered in tarps. We had thought that we had not been before as it has changed so much. It wasn’t until we saw the collapsed school bus under a tree limb when we thought that indeed we had been here before. BTW, the school bus was empty as just parked there overnight when in 1979 a hurricane took down the mammoth branch and collapsed the bus.

So as mentioned with this being our first port we thought we would just wander off the the ship and stroll the streets leading up to the Botanical Gardens, taking a few pics along the way. We ran into some old friends had some chats and walked with as we enjoyed the day. Very nice sail away tonight as Captain Mercer announced that he had some time was going to do some scenic cruising until the sun set, very nice and a very nice sunset it was.  A great day and a great first port on this amazing adventure. A few pics, hope you enjoy… Two cameras on the go so some pics are out of sequence, sorry about that.
