Punta Del Este, Uruguay - Jan 23, 2020

Punta Del Este is renowned as the gateway spot for Argentinians, Chileans, Brazilians and celebrities, it is an upscale resort with towering beach condos, long waterside promenades and casinos. This was a traditional elite playground with over the top beach houses and expensive suburbs. Punta Del Este now attracts a more of a middle class visitor as well. The town’s main draw is its wide sandy beaches, especially the Playa Brava on the Atlantic side of town. Watersports such as kitesurfing and surfing are big here, with many vacationers just relaxing on the beach.

We had a short day here with the last tender coming back to the ship at 2:30pm but took advantage of of the previously mentioned waterside promenades and the beach resort setting this town offers. We did a short version of what we did about a year ago. We strolled along the waterfront to the point of cutting across the river side to the ocean or Playa Brava to see the famous hand in the sand feature - this iconic landmark memorializes those who have drowned in the local waters on the city’s main Atlantic beach. We then cut across town by way of the main shopping street stopping at a great little pizzeria with great beer, pizza and Netflix downloadable wifi, yeah. We continued along to the historical lighthouse and Catholic church (both dating back to 1911). Last year the two sea lions were lazing in the sun on the boat ramp, this year they were much more active as they were in the water getting the scraps from the fish market - yes, I’m pretty sure these are the same two sea lions, I believe they are residents here. Back on board by all aboard time, 2:30 for a nice relaxing afternoon before dinner and another great performance by Lee Bradley. a very nice day here in Punta del Este. Here are a few pics of our day and our Voyage Log from our first segment, Fort Lauderdale to Buenos Aires (tomorrow’s port). Hope you enjoy… I find it kind of funny that they note under the cruise stats, the number of eggs consumed (57,645), why not wine or beer or pounds of meat, I guess eggs is a good benchmark number??? I guess we will add up the number of eggs we will be consuming over the entire 128 days, lol.
