Rio De Janeiro, Brazil - Jan 19, 2020 Part 1

Rio de Janeiro lives up to its nickname of “the Marvellous City”. It is the second-largest city and the former capital of Brazil. The area where Rio de Janerio is now was originally reached by the Portuguese explorers in an expedition led by America Vespucci in January of 1501. Since the Europeans thought is was first the Bay of Guanabara which was actually the mouth of a river, they called it “Rio de Janeiro” or “January River”. The white sand beaches greeted the same explorers as it greets visitors today. The city itself is sprawling with many distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own flavour and identity.

There is a great public transit system here in Rio, with a surface tram leaving right form the dock into town. Simply go to the kiosk at the stop and purchase a Transit Card, $3 Real (less than a dollar), then load it up, a ride will also cost you 3 real. Over 65, its all free - hop on. The tram does a good route taking you into the town centre where you can easily spoke off from. Now this is all what I had hear about as we have a Cruise Critic 2 full day tour here for our current stay in this amazing port. Day 1 was long and intense, Ipanema Beach, Copacabana Beach, up to visit Christ the Redeemer, then a lunch stop in the heart of Rio, Santa Teresa with its cobbled streets which are lined with mansions that were once the home to the city’s wealthy elite. Today it bustles with artists’ studios, restaurants and guest houses. My commentary ends here as we have another full day tomorrow and at some point I will need to rest. This morning’s sail in was simply fantastic but that did get me going at 5:45 this morning with no real breaks all day. Oh I know, first world problems, lol. A few pics of the day, sorry for some of the more risqué shots, blame it on Rio (haha)… Hope you enjoy…
