Boston has an amazing history which dates back to pretty much the beginning of what is the United States of America, today we use term “United” very loosely. The Boston Common, for instance, is one of the oldest public spaces in the country. It was initially used for grazing cattle, today the Common is now a public park used for recreation, relaxing and public events. At 310 Washington Street is the Old meeting house and it was here at this site where the protest against a tax on tea was held, December 16, 1773. The protest that culminated with the Boston Tea Party later that night. The oldest public building in Boston is the Old State House at the corner of State and Washington Streets, built in 1713. It was here on July 18, 1776 where the first public reading on the Declaration of Independence was read. Paul Revere was also born here in Boston and was a silversmith and a patriot. Two famous lanterns hung from a church very close to Paul Revere’s home and on the night of April 18, 1775, these lanterns signalled the movement of British troops into the area, “one if by land, two if by sea”; Paul Revere was one of the riders who spread the news that night.
The beauty of this history in the city is that it is all laid out for you on the “Freedom Trail”. From the Boston Common, simply follow the marked red bricked path through this history. One could walk quickly through it all in about 90 minutes or take in the detail of each site for as long as you wish to absorb this past. We were about 3 hours into it, about as far as the river crossing before we wanted to visit our favourite Lobster place for a late lunch before heading back to the ship. Yankee Lobster is about a 15 minute walk to or from the terminal where cruise ships dock. So when we were ready we simply walked to a major hotel, logged into their wifi and used the Uber App, one minute and $13.00 later we were on our way to lunch. Yankee Lobster is a stand in line to the counter ordering place, they then give you a table marker, go find a place to sit and they will bring you your meal. Today the weather was perfect, sunny and in the low 20’s, so no jacket needed today. All aboard was 3:30, we clocked in at 3:15, all good there. A little rest and relaxation before more R and R with a massage booked for 5:30, deep tissue, nice.
We dined at the specialty restaurant on board, the Pinnacle and then watched the last set of the Ocean Bar Band. So yeah, a great day, indeed. We now have two sea days before Fort Lauderdale and the beginning of the Grand Voyage, there is a bit of a buzz in the air with 73 of us currently on board continuing on. The buzz, well this will be the first Grand Voyage since the big shutdown of 2020. So not only were we on the last GV but now on the first. Will see how it goes, so stay tuned and join along…
A few pics of our day, hope you enjoy…
