September 29, 2024 - Toyama, Japan

The port call today notes Toyama but we are docking in the nearby city of Takaoka, a good train ride away (about 30 Klms). We did have a shuttle bus but again only took us to the Takaoka train station. For us, we were all set to jump on the train and head to Toyama to tour an impressive glass museum but today is Sunday and this museum is not open. Taking a good look at the provided information at the impressive visitor centre welcoming committee there is enough here in Takaoka to give us a good day. Here is a quick google description of where we are today.

Takaoka (高岡市, Takaoka-shi) is a city in the northwestern portion of Toyama Prefecture, Japan. Takaoka has the second largest population after Toyama City.

Takaoka is a center of western Toyama Prefecture. Western Toyama Prefecture is called "Gosei" (呉西) meaning the west of Kureha hill (呉羽丘陵, Kureha-kyuryo), meanwhile eastern Toyama Prefecture is called "Goto" (呉東) meaning the east of Kureha hill.

As mentioned, Takaoka had probably the best welcoming team to date on the pier as we exited the ship and again as we departed later in the day.

The map information was great as was the signage on the streets, Big Buddha this way, 350 meters that kind of thing. We hit three of  the main sites, the Great Buddha (there are three outdoor giant Buddhas in Japan, one is here); the castle gardens where there was a family celebrating their daughter’s 3rd birthday and then to a preserved Merchant and Metal-casting district, Kanayamachi. There happened to be a little restaurant with about a dozen tables offering a two option, basket lunch. This single operator spot was a great spot for lunch, delicious. We looked at a few of opened shops as we headed back to the shuttle bus. At 4:00 pm there were three groups performing for about 45 minutes before we casted off our lines and headed out of the harbour. So a good day here.

Some pics, hope you enjoy…
