September 6, 2024 - Haines, Alaska, USA

First a little history. Haines was named in honour of Francina Haines of the Presbyterian Home Missions Board. Accompanied by his friend, John Muir, S. Hall Young who was the first missionary to the area in 1879. The purpose of their trip was to scout a location for a mission and a school.

Then there was the first known meeting between white men and Tlingit which took place in 1741 when a Russian ship anchored near Haines and started the fur trade in the area. Further along with the gold rush, in1892, Jack Dalton established a toll road on the Tlingit trade route into the interior to cash in on gold-seekers and others heading north into Canada. Parts of this Dalton Trail are now the Haines Highway.

Fast forward to current times where if you take a cruise to Alaska that includes Haines you’ll soon discover why it’s considered the adventure capital of the state. It’s as if time has stopped in Haines. There are no chain stores or even stoplights, and the taverns and shops have that rustic frontier feel.

This is our second visit here where we did a biking excursion the first time around so we focused our visit here this time to a nice circular walk around the town. The town or the ship did offer a shuttle service here that included 3 stops which we took advantage of in transporting between a few of the sites to see but in the most part we were able to comfortably walk to many of the main attractions before heading back to the ship.

Here is a sample of the pics from the day, hope you enjoy…

Cute shops…

The town Museum, worth a visit.

The hammer museum, contains some 1600 hammers - we passed on this one.

Part of the original settlement
