March 18, 2019: Bridgetown, Barbados

Discover the epitome of paradise on the island of Barbados. Just east of St. Vincent and St. Lucia lies this 166 square mile island lined with white sand beaches, lush greenery and plenty of space for just relaxing. This is our second visit here where we did a HAL excursion the first time so we thought we would just wander today and enjoy the historical town and the beautiful bridge area (the root of the name of the city) and perhaps take a look at the beaches. Well in short order and very close by we found ourselves on the beach - note, public access through the parking lot a half a block to your right after crossing the bridge through the parking lot. This beach is paradise beautiful. Walked the full length of it and stopped at the Lobsters Alive for some delicious lobster. I gave you the access area because to access the beach through any restaurant or hotel, you will be charged a fee. This fee is not bad and is reasonable as the fee is usually applied to your food or bar bill but if you just want to stroll the beach and go for a quick swim there is a free option. Our plan did not include a swim but after our lunch, well, Jan decided to just go in and we all just decided to join in the fun. So clothes and all we went in and the water was incredible. A great day. Back to the ship by about 4pm for a some relaxation and putting our clothes into the laundry, lol. Here are a few pics of our day, hope you enjoy…

Just a quick commentary tonight as we all are a bit tired after such hot and beautiful day in the sun and surf, yeah I know, feeling really sorry for us, lol. That said when we returned to the ship we found that we may have a problem with one of our souvenir masks we purchase at the indigenous village on the river in Manaus. In short, during our visit in the Amazon HAL collected all wooden items and put them in the freezer to kill any potential bug problems. Well on the surface this appeared to be a good idea until some items have not been returned to guests, including us. Our item was made mainly of shells and should have not required freezing but the clerk at the time said to be on the safe side that we need to submit the item. We are not happy and are now having to take our own steps in getting our items returned, talk about buck passing between the front office, the beverage staff (the collectors of the items) and the housekeeping department (the keepers of the items). I spoke with the head of housekeeping tonight and he says that he is actively involved in trying to find our items. I am giving him until tomorrow night before having to present a formal complaint to escalate the search. Will keep you posted on how this is resolved. For now, this is caution, I know we have some friends currently on the Veendam in the Amazon, if they are also doing this freezing precaution please ensure they have the proper procedures in place to ensure the safe return of you items.
