June 28, 2017, Umbria, Italy

A border town that separated the Etruscans and the Umbrians, Todi, a close 20 mins away was our town visit today. Todi offers some of the best of Umbria, from the great architecture to a slow pace of life, topped with fine regional cuisine. We visited the obligatory churches including the crypt in one, nice and cool down there. The local delicacies include the truffles and wild boar, yes that was all part of our lunch, delicious as was the local wine, 3.50 euro for half a litre - great value here. This town had a free funicular off the car park, nice and a little different than our funicular from the other day - the picture actually matched the mode of transport. Today was a bit cooler, mid 20's with our first look at some scattered showers. Another great day.

I took a few more from our resort today with some back story. Our write up states, Castella di Izzalini, is a medieval village, which fits perfectly into the historical context of the area, where life follows the natural rhythm of nature and time, a world away from the eccentric frenzy of today's society and jealously guarded by ancient walls which speak of far off deeds and lost traditions. Walls which were fortified in 1194, when Capitano di Ventura (leader of mercenary troops) Ezzelino da Romano, along with his armies, took possession and transformed it into a fortified castle.

Today, the sensation of the past and history can be renewed and rediscovered: the Castle, open to the public, offers skillfully restored apartments. The walls faithfully restored, welcome guests into a fairy tale atmosphere. The apartments, located in the tranquility of the castle walls are designed according to the size and the division of the spaces, keeping the precious detailed to the ancient traditions like the spectacular wooden beams and parquet flooring.

For us it is a special treat to be here for a week, there are a total of 14 apartments within these castle walls.
