June 29, 2017: Umbria, Italy

A bit cooler today, so much more relaxed as we toured in the mid 20 temperatures. Friends, Paul and Cathy arrived last night so wonderful sharing a night cap bottle of wine as we planned our next day's adventure. Paul and Cathy, from Vancouver had spent a few days in Florence before renting a car and exploring the northern parts of Italy. We will all be hiking with them on the Amalfi Coast in a few days but we all thought we would meet here for a couple days of Umbria exploring. Tip, they did not have a GPS system with them and were somewhat frazzled when they came to the resort (I am being kind when I say frazzled), to make any car trip a lot more relaxing I would suggest bringing your GPS from home (simply because you already know how to use it) and upload the current maps for the areas you are going to visit. I also suggested that we take both cars on our daily excursions as the roads here are very curvy which is fine for the driver but not so relaxing from the back seat, especially if you at all get car sick. Tomorrow is  Market day in Orvieto, great we knew where to park, so all good, they hadn't been there and market days can always be fun. Plus, not too far of a drive (40 mins away). After a few hours of meandering we headed to our second stop of the day, Civita di Bagnoregio, wow what a great stop (full credit to Rick Steves for this one). This village is literally built on top of a crag piece of cliff, did I say wow. What a wonderful find, a billion picturesque photo opts, loved this spot, weather was perfect. This is a full functioning village, yes, people live and work here in this fairy tale environment. We had a wonderful lunch before heading back to our villa.

Dinner tonight was on us as we promised Paul and Cathy an Italian dinner on their first night. Risotto con gamberi (with prawns), finished with the local truffle oil. Salad and then a quick stroll to the store for the local gelato for dessert. And yes all coupled with local wine. All worked well, nice to have a fully equipped kitchen (okay the knives could have been a lot sharper). Great day, great night. Well…. With the exception of almost running out of gas, long story short (remember we are in the middle of nowhere), pulled into the gas station and filled up my 40 litre tank with 39.1 litres of fuel, so yeah less than a litre before dry. Realized this oh about 50 Klms ago when the light came on, changed my GPS to find a gas station and this is how close it was. Will need to rethink this in the future. All good, a few posts of our day, hope you enjoy.
