Antelope Canyon’s beauty makes it one of the most highly sought after destination in the world and access to this natural marvel is granted only with a Navajo guide.
Our write up goes on to state that Antelope is like no other spot on earth. At midday, when the sun is shining, shafts of light cut into the canyon, illuminating the narrow orange and gold sandstone walls. The effect is almost surreal, and photographers from around the globe come to capture its beauty.
Visiting Antelope Canyon isn’t as easy as just driving into the parking lot and walking up to the entrance. We booked the last two spots at the 10:20 am time slots about a week ago when I first stumbled onto this amazing sight to see. The ideal time to view this canyon is between 11:00 - 1PM with sun directly overhead at this time of year.
So what an incredible experience to have on the eve of my birthday. A little more detail, Antelope Canyon was created millions of years of erosion and is part of the Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park, located 10 minutes east of Page. Although a one slot canyon, there are two points of entry, the Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon. The Upper Canyon is at ground level with a less than 2% incline, making it the more popular entrance. The Lower Canyon requires more walking down and up several flights of stairs and ladders.
We toured the about 100 yard Upper Antelope Canyon on this day and although very hot outside the canyon itself dropped the temperature at least 10 degrees.
A question came up as to how this Canyon was discovered as it really is a bit obscure. Well a little girl back in the late 1930’s lost one of her sheep somewhere around this area and found the sheep in this slot canyon as it was seeking a cool place. She told her people about it and thereby this sight became a great attraction.
This was a an incredible tour and we highly recommend it. Yes, there are several tour companies that do this tour, we opted for the one highly recommended on trip advisor that was more of a luxury way to do it. Air conditioned vehicles, many are open vehicles (lots of dust gets kicked up), ours was closed. We had a small group with no waiting giving us VIP access. Just fantastic.
Pics of our experience… hope you enjoy.
