We pulled out of the KOA Grand Canyon at about 11:30 and headed south towards Williams before jumping on the I40 towards Flagstaff. Once through Flagstaff we changed direction once again and drove north along highway 89. Highway 89 presented such an incredible landscape that the last hour and a half of driving went by so fast. I asked Jan at one point that I felt I was driving on the moon, just so scenic. This was also the first area that we had to deal with wind gusts, this made for very interesting driving. All good, our truck and trailer with the sway control dealt with it just fine. Well just fine until a wind gust popped my front hood, now that has never happened before. I was able to slowly pull over and close the hood but wow.
Our campground/ RV Park here in Page is brand spanking new and beautiful, The Canyons RV Resort and Cabins. Kind of has that Wadi Rum feel to it. We are very happy with this choice as our site overlooks the canyon which offers beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The whole campground is not quite open yet but they are close, they are still levelling some sites and waiting for city approval before being able to open the pool - should be next week says the attendant checking us in. One last thing on this campground, the bathhouses are amazing, great fit and finishes with rain shower heads in the very large shower stalls with great pressure and great hot water.
We had a good night sleep, sleeping in a little before our coffees and making plans for the day. I know I wanted to visit the famous Horseshoe Bend Sight but that was only an hour out of the day. Our reading materials at the campground had the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument as a sight to visit some 40 minutes away. Well this 40 minutes turned into 3 fabulous hours of sight seeing. Yes, the Vermilion Cliff sight is amazing but just beyond this Monument is a place where the cave dwellers lived - amazing, simply amazing. Coming back we saw a turn off for Lee’s ferry, okay let’s check that out. Well Lee’s Ferry is Glen Canyon which is just another incredible sight to see. Glen Canyon has cliffs, balancing boulders, the Colorado River and a old Homestead, called the Dells. Back in the day, 1872, the Lee’s developed this homestead as Mr. Lee was the first ferryman to ferry travellers from one side of the Colorado river to the other side. It was wonderful to walk amongst this history.
Returning to Page we did make the stop at the famous Horseshoe Bend on the equally famous Colorado River. Ten dollars (per vehicle) to get in and about an hour should do you well for a visit here. Again, incredible.
We returned to Andiamo at about 5:30pm for an early dinner and a chance to hike up the hill behind us for some sunset pics. So yes, another fabulous day on the road. Tomorrow will be also very exciting, we have a tour booked for the fabulous, Antelope Canyon.
Our pics for the last few days, yes, in a few parts… hope you enjoy…
The drive along the 89, was eye popping, let alone hood popping…
We just to pull over at a scenic pull off.
Our Campground, The Canyons
Half the Park still under final construction.
