Jun 21, 2023 - Yellowstone Ntl Park, Day 2

We arrived at the Park gate at about 1pm and with no line up today, drove right in. There were no slow downs on our first stretch where yesterday, we took over an hour and a half, so things were going well. As you recall yesterday there were the herd of Bison that slowed everything down. Yesterday was fine because it was also our first view, today this was a bonus as we were able to where we wanted to go. Okay, not so fast. Just as we said this is going great, we grind to a complete halt. Is there an animal viewing up ahead? A geyser? Nope, road work, an hour and a half of road work delay. So it looks like whether it is animals or other factors, be prepared for some road traffic delays while in Yellowstone. Don’t let that stop you from coming to this amazing park. Just pack some patience.

We finally got to our first stop, the Norris Geyser Basin. The Norris Geyser Basin is the Park’s hottest, most dynamic basin. It includes Steamboat, the world’s tallest geyser. We did shorten our time here by walking a short loop but we did have enough time to appreciate this basin.

Leaving the Norris Badin we headed East across the Park, over to Canyon Village and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, just fantastic as the pictures will show. The village itself has a great area for a break, many food options with plenty of parking.

From here we headed North to continue along the Great Loop. We did take a short and worth it detour towards the Northeast gate. Here we were delayed with Bison, lots of Bison, at one point we had to wait until part of a herd crossed the road right in front of us - pretty cool. We were also delayed by a Grizzly bear grazing, again, pretty cool. Back to the Great Loop with heading towards, Mammoth Hot Springs and we climbed up to the snow line and had the feeling that we were back in Switzerland with its steep mountains and valleys and green, green, green. The only thing missing was someone in lederhosen playing one of this long horns, lol. Just beautiful. With time not being our friend, we only did only a quick stop at Mammoth Hot Springs to continue back to home before it got dark. It was now 8:30 and I punched our home base into the GPS, an hour and a half it displays, oh boy, is this longer than anticipated, you bet.

Okay, let’s get going as we speed up a bit but within minutes we had to stop, Bison? No, Elk? No, antelope? Nope, we see just off the road a Grizzly with her two cubs, yes, we had to stop and enjoy this amazing sighting. So, yes, we pulled into our campground about 10 minutes after the “quiet” time. We tippy towed into our waiting and warm Andiamo, shut the blinds and quickly made a couple of fried egg sandwiches before hitting the sack. A long but amazing day…

Our day in pictures, hope you enjoy…
