Ushuaia is at 55 degrees latitude south and holds the distinction of being “the southernmost city in the world”. It is the largest city in Argentina Tierra del Fuego, an archipelago of nearly 30,000 square miles. It is surrounded by the South Atlantic Ocean, the strait of Magellan and the easternmost part of the Pacific Ocean. So we are about as low as you can go in the civilized world.
Our target today was to get to the end of the world, the end of the PanAmerican Highway which extends from Alaska to, well, here in Ushuaia. The highway’s end is at Tierra del Fuego National Park. The Tierra del Fuego National Park was created to protect the southern portion of sub-antarctic forest. It provides visitors with the opportunity to enjoy the Andes and the regions forests. rivers, lakes and peat bogs. It is also home to a large variety of birds. In addition of being the end of the road, literally, it also contains the southernmost post office, so we had a few items to check off the bucket list.
Marianne, Marcel, Jan and I headed off the ship at about 9:30 and by 10 we were comfortably in a taxi driven by Romualdo Barboza, Taxi 156 (cell. for WhatsApp 054 02901 524922, email: romu_bar@hotmail.com) and were headed toward the Tierro del Fuego National Park. Romu, did a great job for us with great recommendations and some hiking suggestions that he allotted time for. His english is not the best but again why should if be. That said if you are going to visit here, he may be a good driver to contact, he had fair pricing and a route that took in all the main sights in the park with plenty of stops along the way. The tour was to be 3 hours but with all the stops and hikes it was closer to 4 hours, we had a late all aboard time so time was not the issue. Romu went above and beyond when we asked him about a restaurant that serves the famous king crab, well he went to 3 if not 4 restaurants to find one that serves it but fell short where we settled with him in the downtown core and found a good restaurant where we were informed that this was not the season for it and that no restaurants were serving the king crab.
The weather today could not have been better, sunny and warm so a great day overall. The only problem I had was at some point I must have consumed something that did not agree with me as once I got back to the ship I was not feeling well and went to put my head down for a nap. Well, this thing hit me full on within an hour and in short i did not leave the room all night where I missed tai chi in the morning and only had a very small breakfast and a small lunch, so I am having literally a, “sea day”. Feeling better now as I write this as we just passed into the Southern Ocean. Here are some pics of our day, hope you enjoy…
