Ahhh, almost a normal sea day, almost returning to regularly scheduled programming, almost. Today in preparation to visiting the sensitive environment of South Georgia Island we had to have whatever clothes we are going to wear in South Georgia, biosecurity checked. Meaning, inspected and if necessary cleaned of all dirt and contaminants that might be present to ensure we are not bringing any types of seeds, insects etc to the island. Pretty quick and easy but a bit involved because you end up bringing more than you may actually be wearing because we do not have the weather report as of yet.
Qi Gong followed by Tai Chi this morning then some great lectures, Natural History and Wildlife of South Georgia and then the story of Frank Hurley, Shackleton’s photographer in the early afternoon. At just after 3 pm the last four days kind of caught up to me when a I laid my head down for the usual 20 minute cat nap but didn’t wake up until almost 5, wow. Refreshed, headed to the gym for about an hour then hot tub and steam before getting ready for a formal night. Our Security Officer, Norm and his wife, Moira hosted our table which was very nice. Great show tonight with the Prinsendam Singers and Dancers. Another full day tomorrow as we are doing some more scenic cruising of South Georgia Island in the afternoon, so still a bit more expedition type cruising where the weather and waves will dictate our schedule. Looking forward to it.
For the Shackleton fan out there, this would have been about day 12 of the dingy crossing from Elephant island to South Georgia. Shackleton left the majority of his men on Elephant Island and him with 5 others traveled the 15 days to get to South Georgia, an amazing feat considering that we are tossing around in our ship in these 10 - 12 foot swelled waves. I stood outside tonight and just looked out and tried to imagine the sleep deprived, soaking wet all the time, men out there in these conditions, really truly amazing.
A few pics of our day, short and sweet today, hope you enjoy…
Nice puzzle pillow gift tonight after our Gala night, always a nice touch.
