February 16, 2019: Punta Del Este, Uruguay

Punta Del Este is renowned as the gateway spot for Argentinians, Chileans, Brazilians and celebrities, it is an upscale resort with towering beach condos, long waterside promenades and casinos. This was a traditional elite playground with over the top beach houses and expensive suburbs. Punta Del Este now attracts a more of a middle class visitor as well. The town’s main draw is its wide sandy beaches, especially the Playa Brava on the Atlantic side of town. Watersports such as kitesurfing and surfing are big here, with many vacationers just relaxing on the beach.

We had a short day here with the last tender coming back to the ship at 2:30pm but took advantage of of the previously mentioned waterside promenades and the beach resort setting this town offers. We (Marianne, Marcel, Michel, Jan and myself) were off the ship by about 9 and strolling by about 9:30. We clocked a good dozen kilometres today with most of those kilometres along the waterfront, along one side of the peninsula cutting across town to the Playa Brava where there is the famous hand coming out of the sand - great photo opportunity. We continued along to the lighthouse and then to the fish market where there were these most incredible sea lions (huge) and then for a chivito (a sandwich made of beef) and calamari and a few beers for lunch (with wifi of course). We were back on the ship by about 2pm, so all good. Beautiful warm day, so we had a swim at the aft pool, then afternoon trivia followed by some relaxing and reading. Dinner tonight was very nice, Ingie (a cruise friend from Vancouver) knows one of the current guest entertainers very well, Shirley Dominguez (wonderful harpist) and had ask to join our table tonight, so Ingie, Shirley and her cousin joined our table for a very nice meal and wonderful company.

Another great day as we head to Monte Video, Uruguay tomorrow, a few pics of our day, hope you enjoy…
