Sept 13, 2018: Dijon, France

Dijon is the capital city of the historical Burgundy region here in eastern France, and is one of the counties main wine producing regions. Dijon is known for its, surprise, traditional mustard, vineyard tours, an autumn gastronomic fair and building styles ranging from gothic to Art Deco. The well preserved town centre has cobbled streets, timber framed medieval houses and ornate 13 to 17 century mansions. The city’s food market, glass and steel Les Halles, was designed by Gustave Eiffel, yes, of the world famous, Eiffel Tower.

We checked into the Mercure Hotel, Dijon Centre Clémenceau, very nice and as in the title just on the edge of town. The centre of town is an easy few minute walk to this very historical town which is very well kept up and presents itself wonderfully. After a bit of a rest this afternoon and meeting most of our group we headed off pretty much individually for a first night meal. Some had already eaten, some where having a drink, so the four of us headed off (Jan, Brian, Anna and I) to a place that was recommended to Anna by a shop keeper earlier in the day.

Our dining experience at the La Maison Des Cariatides was simply fantastic, the gastronomic dining experience continues. Our waitress, who happened to be from Vancouver (well actually the Sunshine Coast, Egmont, specifically), held the menus and said that they offer a chef surprise menu of four courses for 48euro pp. Knowing about this region and the chefs around these parts, we all said, absolutely and please suggest a good local wine to compliment whatever the chef is going to bring out. We were not disappointed. Once again another great day and experience here in France.
