November 17, 2021: Bari, Italy

Again a bit of an off again, on again sleep last night, new hotel and bed after all. The Palace Hotel here in Bari was quieter than I had anticipated, so nice surprise. With all the tossing and turning we finally woke up at about 10:15, yikes… they only serve breakfast until 10:30, talk about hitting the floor running. The hotel breakfast was actually pretty good, Covid protocols and all. This area here is self serve but not here, we will serve you, you ask what you would like and we get for you. This was a bit frustrating but worked out well enough. Why frustrating, well I asked for some pineapple, I would have usually taken a couple pieces, not the 7 I received - must pay attention on how they are loading up the plate, lol.

Today was about exploring this city much more while retracing some of our steps from last night. The castle in some of the pics dates back to about 1100 AD, completed in about the 1300’s. We read mixed reviews about touring this castle and decided to not take the effort to explore it, it appears that they could do a better job of presenting it. The reviews complained that you get very limited access to much of the castle and no real access to the walls or inner courtyard, yes there is some art but not enough for us to bite. We did a good walk around it before entering the old district. Great buildings, great architecture, so great for photographs. There are plenty of shops here to explore as well, some unusual stuff along with many staple stores, butchers, vegetable markets, cheese shops etc. We did a little retail therapy here as well as in the new area of town, all in a few good hours of wandering about.

Dinner tonight was in the old town, Pizzeria Borgo Antico, a nice little outside restaurant (they also had a great indoor restaurant area), that looked and felt inside even though it was outside - well it felt inside until the rain began to fall. We were able to shuffle one table over and were nice and dry and warm, it was a great dinner and very reasonably priced - we are not experiencing Rome prices here. All in all another very nice day. Our only drawback is the hotel internet, pretty much non existent, so no blog updating from here, so by the time you are able to view this will be a few day after the fact, oh well. Here are a few pics of the day, hope you enjoy… We are getting our car tomorrow to continue our adventure in this wonderful area of Puglia and beyond, we are staying at an Agriturismo for the next week, kind of in the middle of nowhere Puglia, we will be doing day spoke outs from there, should be great and interesting. Stayed tuned, hopefully they will have internet…
