November 27, 2021: Locri, Calabria, Italy

We had a nice sleep here in our Locri, BnB, a knock on the door at 10:00 and in came our traditional Italian breakfast, cappuccinos with an assortment of pastries - very nice. We then did a little walk about town before heading the 5 klms to the Archeological museum. This is where the ancient city of Locri Epizephiri was founded, unearthed towards the end of the 19th century. Built in around the 3rd and 4th century BC, this 300 hectares of farmland was exposed and in great part help stimulate the economy here in Locri. We did a good wander about getting very close to these unearthed ruins, just magnificent with this fabulous weather to add to wonderful way to spend a Saturday.


We were back at our BnB by about 4:30 to have a snack and rest before our dinner tonight. Tonight was very special, we were picked up at 8:00 pm by Salvatore and Teresa and drove a little ways to meet the bus that their daughter, Valentina. Valentina was coming from Milan for the next 5 days, so we were very fortunate to be here during her visit. Valentina speaks great English so it was so much easier to communicate with all at the table for our dinner. After our initial hellos, we headed up towards, Gerace, and to a little restaurant just on the outskirts of Gerace, the area we were told were Jan’s grandfather, Nicola lived and worked. It was very kind of them to take Jan and I here so Jan could really get a feel of this area where her family came from. We enjoyed a nice pizza feast and chatted about many topics from family to Netflix. After dinner we all headed up to the castle overlooking Gerace and Locri below. Again, with Salvatore pointing out where Jan’s grandfather had lived. We arrived back to our BnB at about 11:30pm both full from our dinner and hearts full of family warmth. We thank the Monteleones’ for their hospitality and kindness and making our visit here so very special.
