Picture, if you will, a beautiful knee high Italian leather ladies boot, high heeled of course. Now go to the bottom of that high heel, yes, all the way to the bottom and now picture the little rubber tip that is put onto said heel, well this is where our destination was today. We drove all the way down the inseam of the Italian heel all the way down to the tip of the heel, this is where the Adriatic Sea meets the Mediterranean - bonus it was a beautiful day to boot (pun intended).
I love driving in Italy, aggressively organized in short, well laid our Autostradas and the most wonderful back roads. I have found another on of my favourite drives of the world, the S358, from the tip of the boot heel up to Porto Badisco, we then stayed sea side all the way to Otranto. So, yes we did take mostly the Autostrada to the tip, just over two hours and then took our time coming back, just beautiful. When the moon rose it was just magical, full and magnificent and then we came upon a beautifully preserved ruin, what a great back drop. In Otranto we were able to park right at the sea, another 20 yards and the car would have gotten wet. I just had to step out with my high beams on to catch a picture of the spray - did I say this was all very magical and serendipitous, it was one of those, lets drive down here moments.
At this point it was put the GPS on and make our way to our dinner stop Lecce. Lecce has some great ruins and artifacts including half of an unearthed Roman amphitheatre, amazing. We decided to have our dinner right beside it at a great spot, all in including drinks 38 Euro. So back to driving in Italy and this time of year, you simply cannot be worried about driving in the dark, the sun goes down around 5 and then you have the magic hour until 6, then its dark. So you have to be okay with driving in the dark. We chose this drive to do today because I knew the weather gods were on our side, this may not have been do enjoyable in a downpour, so in short, pick your spots when it comes to driving. Today was a long drive day, tomorrow we will visit 3 towns all within an hour of here, stay tuned. A few pics of our incredible day, hope you enjoy… BTW, thank you for your comments through email and other social media avenues, much appreciated…
